Bugs Thrash Jr. Americans Behind Big Third Period
September 14, 2023 – North American Hockey League (NAHL) – Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
The Shreveport Mudbugs (2-0) never trailed and delivered a big third period to beat the Rochester Jr. Americans, 6-3 in Game 2 of the 2023 NAHL Showcase Thursday afternoon.
SHV got off to a fast start just 53 seconds in as Brent Litchard tipped home his first goal of the young season to give the Bugs an early 1-0 edge. Will Murphy put the initial shot to get the primary assist and Nick Marino earned the secondary helper. Rochester would respond at 3:15 as Gabriel Cull would score a tally in front to even the score, 1-1. The two-time Robertson Cup Champs got on the board again late in the opening period as Ryan Burke redirected a shot off of Logan Heroux for his first of the year to make it a 2-1 Bugs edge.
After the Americans would tie the game early in the second period, it was Hayden Nichol who swept in a puck in front for his second goal in as many games to give SHV the lead back at 3-2 at 16:41. Breyden Cook continued his nice showcase earning another assist on that goal. The third lead of the day for Shreveport was short-lived as Dexter Kichline scored on an odd-man rush in the zone to make it a 3-3 contest at 18:19.
The third period was all Mudbugs as newcomer Kyan Haldenby got in the slot and hammered home his first goal of the campaign from Carter McKay and Maksim Sushchynski to give Shreve the lead back once again at 4-3 at 6:16. SHV would add on at 13:30 as McKay would direct home his first tally to make it a 5-3 ballgame. Then it was the white-jersey Captain Hayden Nichol yet again punching in his second goal of the contest to complete a Bugs’ 6-3 victory over Rochester.
Carson Dorfman improves to 2-0 on the young season as he made 25 saves on the day.
The Bugs will continue their NAHL showcase tomorrow afternoon as they’ll take on the Bismarck Bobcats. Puck drop is scheduled for 2 p.m.
