Capitols Acquire Berzins in Trade with Tri-City
August 24, 2023 – United States Hockey League (USHL) – Madison Capitols News Release
The Madison Capitols announced today that the team acquired goaltender Patriks Berzins in a trade with the Tri-City Storm in exchange for multiple draft picks. The announcement was made by Head Coach and General Manager Andy Brandt.
Berzins, 19, joins Madison after completing his first season of junior hockey in the U.S. The 6’1″, 185 lbs backstop recorded eleven wins in fifteen appearances with Tri-City after joining the Storm in January. Besides the win total, Berzins was also able to record a 2.66 goals against average and a .890 save percentage. Berzins helped the Storm finish fourth place in the Western Conference during the 2022-23 regular season.
The native of Talsi, Latvia, was able to represent his home country in the 2023 World Junior Championships in Halifax. In the WJC, Berzins amassed a 2.47 goals against average and a .914 save percentage while tending the goal in every game for Latvia. He was joined by Capitols Karlis Mezsargs and Rainers Rullers on the team.
Berzins played with Danbury of the NAHL prior to being acquired by Tri-City. With Danbury, Berzins recorded a .920 save percentage, which put him in the top ten in that category. Oddly enough, Berzins was swapped for Caps’ goaltender Mezsargs in that deal.
In exchange for the Latvian net minder, the Capitols have agreed to send the team’s 2024 Phase I 3rd Round Selection and the team’s 2024 Phase II 2nd Round Selection. Madison has also received Tri-City’s 2024 Phase I 10th Round Selection as part of the trade.
