Club America confirm the departure of Guillermo Ochoa

Guillermo Ochoa is officially headed to Europe.

Club America confirmed the goalkeeper’s departure, wishing him well in his next ‘European adventure.’

“After three and a half years, in his second phase with the club, Guillermo Ochoa will depart from the institution that saw him grow as a historic player of Club America and Mexican football,” a Club America statement read.

“Club America thanks Guillermo Ochoa for his commitment and devotion, and for defending the colors yellow and blue with so much passion and leadership throughout his 10 plus years with the senior team.

“Memo, Club America will always be your home. Thank you for forming part of these 106 years of history and grandness. We will remember you with esteem always. Before we reconnect, keep flying and raising our colors and Mexico high. See you later. “

Additionally, Guillermo Ochoa expressed his gratitude to the club that gave him his professional debut, saying: “I will always be grateful to the fans and directive for their unconditional support.”

The statement comes after sky Sports’ Gianluca Di Marzio reported it’s a “done deal” between the Mexican goalkeeper and Serie A’s U.S. Salernitana.

“The negotiation between Salernitana and Guillermo Ochoa closed in just over 36 hours. the parties had been working on it since Monday morning and the closure arrived on Tuesday afternoon,” said the reporter.

Guillermo Ochoa is no stranger to European football, seeing stints with Ajaccio, Malaga, Granada and Standard Liege between 2011 and 2019. He stood as Standard Liege’s first choice keeper throughout the 2018/2019 campaign, recording 48 appearances across the Belgian Super League and Europa League, before earning the club’s Player of the Season award.

Despite that, though, the Belgian club did not renew his two-year deal, paving the way for his return to Club America for a second spell.

Ochoa has seen recent success under head coach Fernando Ortiz, inspiring the team to first place on the Liga MX table during the 2022 Apertura while managing several record-breaking victories.
