Miller Homers, Hurlers Bring Heat to Clinch Series

CLEARWATER, FL – Aidan Miller’s two-run homer in the third was enough to spark a 2-1 win for the Clearwater Threshers (79-50, 2-1) over the Lakeland Flying Tigers (70-61, 1-2) to book their spot in the Florida State League Championship series. The Threshers duel for the FSL title against the Jupiter Hammerheads (Miami Marlins, Single-A) on Sunday, September 17.

Emaarion Boyd reached on a single with two outs in the third inning off Lakeland starter Joe Adametz. Aidan Miller followed with a deep home run to left that gave the Threshers a 2-0 lead. The Flying Tigers responded with one run in the fourth to cut the lead down to 2-1.

Great pitching from both sides kept the lead at one run through the rest of the game, with each side allowing just one hit after the fourth inning. With the bases loaded and one out in the ninth, Tigers second-rounder Max Anderson grounded into a double play to seal the 2-1 win and send the Threshers to the League Championship.

Jonathan Petit allowed one run on two hits with two walks and six strikeouts in a 4.0-inning no-decision. Braeden Fausnaught tossed 1.2 shutout innings with two strikeouts, two walks and one hit allowed. Saul Teran (1-0) pitched 2.0 scoreless and hitless frames with one walk and three strikeouts to earn the win. Josh Bortka took the save in a 1.1-inning effort with one strikeout, two walks and one hit allowed.

Miller’s homer in the third was the first of his professional career…it was his second multi-hit game as a Thresher as well…Teran earned his first win as a Thresher…Boyd turned in his first multi-hit game of the postseason…The Threshers begin the championship series on Sunday, September 17, against the Jupiter Hammerheads at 6:00 pm in West Palm Beach…The next home game is game two of the FSL Championship series against Jupiter on Tuesday, September 19…You can purchase playoff tickets at ThreshersBaseball.com/tickets or by calling 727-467-4457.
